Cylinders black marketed for Rs 1000
With the festival season in the offing and the restriction on subsidised gas cylinders, the black market in domestic gas cylinders is thriving and the price of a cylinder has shot up astronomically .
A subsidised cylinder costing `400 is being sold for `1,000 or even more in the black market. The black market price earlier was a more modest `600. Delivery boys are collecting the price of non-subsidised cylinders to supply subsidised cylinders in black.
Thousands of consumers in the city possessing unauthorised cylinders depend on the black market to purchase refills. Today, they have to fork out much more for the cylinders that they get after haggling with the delivery boys to whom they hand over their empty cylinder and obtain refills on the spot by paying.
The delivery boys adjust such refills by delaying delivery for genuine customers.
With demand increasing, genuine consumers are lodging complaints with agencies saying they have received an SMS stating that their cylinder has been delivered though they have not received it.
